Interpretation Centre Moves Forward

October 2003 Interpretation Centre Moves Forward –
Merton Council is helping with establishing a new charitable trust to spearhead the plans to bring a new Interpretation Centre to the former site of Merton Priory. It follows the completion of a feasibility study carried out by the Continuum Group (the consultancy responsible for internationally renowned tourist attractions like the Jorvik Viking Centre in York) and funded by Countryside Properties and the Wandle Valley Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme, jointly funded by the London Borough of Merton and English Heritage. As a result of this study, we now have an idea of the overall scale of the project and potential construction and operating costs. The Trust will be making a bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund for funding towards the project which it is hoped will restore access to this important part of Merton’s Heritage.
